Ravenna

I woke up at 5:30 yesterday and took a three hour bus ride towards the Adriatic coast of Italy to a little town called Ravenna. It was the cutest place, and it was so nice to get out of Florence and the busy and crowded city streets for a day. Ravenna was under Venetian rule a long long time ago, so the buildings and atmosphere reminded me a lot of Venice. There were palm trees and hardly any people, so it felt like a mini island vacation away from Florence. We ate lunch at an adorable Anthropologie-like restaurant with bookshelves and antique-style furniture. I got a big plate of mussels with a tomato saute that was just to die for. It was a very long day of touring the churches and baptistries, but seeing their beautiful mosaics made the whole trip worth while. We got back to Florence at around 9 pm and still had time to run to our favorite gelato place and sit on the steps of the Duomo for some excellent people watching. A great way to celebrate my Dad's birthday a couple thousand miles away. Happy birthday Dad!!!

(Just another day in class?!)
